The Kärntner Strasse stretches from Stephansplatz to the Opera/Ring and is Vienna´s exclusive shopping promenade.
Usually the street is crowded with thousands of tourists from all over the world. But still it is a MUST-SEE at least for visitors who never haven been to the city.
An advice: Take a step in the back alleys. Literally behind every corner you will explore beautiful historic places. And sit down in a cafe and enjoy a "Wiener Melange" (Vienna´s famous milk coffee)
Congratulation, you made it to the end of our Vienna "EAST" tour. The final panorama shows the skyline of Vienna. The area here is called Donaucity (or Donauplatte) and houses some pretty high skyscrapers.
You can get here in just 10 minutes from Stephansplatz easy by the U1 underground. On a sunny day you can even swim in the "Neue Donau" just in front of you. Or you lay down in the green grass, or take a bicycle tour, or....
This place is just gorgeous....
Just a 5-minutes walk from Stephansplatz you arrive at Schwedenplatz, a busy place with an underground station, tramways, restaurants and lots of clubs & nightlife.
In November 2020 the area was hit by a terrorist shooting. Nobody in Vienna has ever thought this could happen to this calm and friendly city....
During your trip in Vienna you HAVE to visit the little village "Grinzing" which is located in the north of the city. Grinzing is known for its lovely wine hills and the "Heuriger", where you can sit down and taste some local wines.
Grinzing is also known for Beethoven, who lived here in several houses, just like the big white one in the middle of the panorama. This is a true Viennese experience.
The Danube is part of Vienna´s and Austria´s identity. It is "more" than just a major river. A lot of songs, waltzes, art and even a whole monarchy is based around the "blue" Danube.
Since the beginning of Vienna in the 1st century as the roman village "Vindobona" the Danube is an important economic factor. Today, for example it supplies Vienna with electricity.
Plus it is a huge recreational area, with a national park...
Congratulations, you made it to the "Heaven" => Himmel. Himmel is the actual name of an area by the Kahlenberg, high above the north of the city.
Here you can enjoy the best views of Vienna and talk a walk in the famous "Wienerwald" - a huge forest area in the north/west of the city - also known as Vienna´s "green lung".
The Prater is Vienna´s gigantic recreational area, near the city center. Usually it is connected with the amusement park & the Giant Ferry Wheel, but the main part of Prater is just woods, meadows, alleys and pure nature.
Right now you are standing on the so called "Hauptallee" which is a straight 4.5 km road (with no cars) and this alley goes back to the 16th century. On a sunny day thousands of Viennese people are doing their work-out here.
Wow, what a view! Schloss Schönbrunn is Austria's most visited sight and by now you should know why. The palace and the surrounding gardens are located in the west of Vienna, but are easily accessible with the U4 underground.
Schönbrunn was home to many Austrian emperors, kings and queens like Maria Theresa, Kaiser Franz Joseph or the famous Kaiserin Elisabeth (Sissy)
Step in, because there is plenty to see and explore....
The Karlsplatz is another hotspot of Vienna's city center. The place is a main traffic hub and the junction of U1, U2 and U4 (all underground lines).
The scenery is dominated by the Karlskirche, one of the major sights of Vienna. The place in front of the church often hosts festivals and is just a hip and urban place to be.
Right around the corner you have many highlights, like the Musikverein, the Schwarzenbergplatz, The Opera and the "Naschmarkt" - one of Vienna's oldest food markets.
In the recent years the Donaukanal became somehow Vienna´s new urban hotspot.
The Kanal (originally an old sewage water system) is a branch of the Danube and along its way through the city you can go for a walk, have a drink and dine in one of the many fancy restaurants.
The area is also known for its graffiti art and some of the best clubs of the whole world are located here, like the FLEX or the "GRELLE FORELLE"
The Giant Wheel in the Prater is Vienna´s most famous landmark (besides Stephansdom & Schloss Schönbrunn). It was built 1897 to celebrate Kaiser Franz Joseph 50th year of regency.
A ride takes you 65 meters above the city and offers an awesome view of Vienna. The Ferris Wheel is also the entrance to the "Würstelprater" - a big amusement park with a lot of thrilling rollercoasters & rides...
Don´t forget to have a beer and a knuckle of pork in the famous Schweizergarten restaurant. Again a very true Viennese experience.
You are now standing by the Ringstrasse - Vienna´s main city center road, which circles 5,2 km around the first district.
Right in front, you see the Opera, but the whole area is filled with magnificent buildings, palaces, world-class hotels and chalets. Most of the buildings around the Ringstrasse were built in the architectural period of "Historicism" during the 19th century.
You can call the Ringstrasse a "showcase" of the Habsburg Danube monarchy. The Ringstrasse belongs (like the whole historic center of Vienna) to the UNESCO cultral heritage.
After walking down Kärntner Strasse you will reach the famous "Vienna State Opera", just by the Ringstrasse. This house is the pulsating heart of Vienna´s/Austria´s cultural life. And it is one of the best operas in the whole world.
If you have the chance, try to get a ticket for a performance - you will remember the evening for your whole life - guaranteed!
A side fact - not only rich people visit the opera in Vienna - it is a very common thing to do, even for workers, taxi drivers, etc...
Vienna is full of great buildings, but this one really stands out - the City Council just by the Ring. It was constructed in the late19th century and was built in Neo-Gothic style.
The place in front of the Rathaus is also famous for its Christmas Market and in winter, you can do ice skating here.
The "Volksgarten" is just another gem of Viennas city center. The "public garden" is located just beside the Heldenplatz and is perfect for taking a lovely walk.
Enjoy the romantic scenery with the rose gardens and the Theseus temple. But be careful, by now you don´t want to leave Vienna ever again.
You can´t visit Vienna without taking a walk on the historic Heldenplatz. This huge square is located between the Ring, the Hofburg and the Volksgarten.
All over the place you will find historic statues and great architecture. Of course this place breathes the age-long regency of the Habsburg Monarchy.
Today the place is often used for festivals, concerts & big events.
Just by the "Ringstrasse" with all its pomposity, you find two buildings which acts like twins - the "Museum of Natural History" and the "Museum of History of Art".
If you don´t know which one is which, don´t bother, as most of the Viennese don´t know it either! But most important, you should visit both. Especially the KHM (Art Museum) holds an impressive collection of old masterpieces from f.e. Bruegel.
This panorama shows Vienna´s main university and the impressive Votivkirche, which reminds a bit of the Stephansdom. These tourist attractions are again located just by the Ring.
The park here is usually crowded with students, taking a rest from lectures, but because of the Corona pandemic in spring 2021, all universities are closed...
The picture below shows the famous "arcade court" inside the old university building.
The Burggarten is the perfect place to chill on a warm day. It is located right between the Hofburg and the Opera and offers great views in a typical Viennese "imperial setting".
One of the main attraction is the Mozart memorial made out of marble. This is truly a perfect photo spot for a selfie. Or sit down and breathe the spirit of this great composer.
The back part of Schönbrunn opens in a huge garden & park! Some consider this being the most beautiful garden in the whole world.
The area invites taking long walks between endless artistic cut alleys, precious flower gardens and artistic statues.
Feel like a King & Queen and forget time and space in this imperial heaven of well-being.
In the back part of the Schönbrunn gardens you'll find the Neptunbrunnen > the fountain of Neptun. This is one of the main photo hotspots for tourists here.
And another attraction is just around the corner, the famous Vienna Zoo. This is the oldest zoo in the world and MUST-VISIT for every tourist. The mixture of wild animals located in the imperial summer residence of Schönbrunn is truly unique...
Our tour WEST ends with probably the best view in whole Vienna. The view from the Gloriette down to Schloss Schönbrunn.
The Gloriette is sitting perfectly on top of the main park hill, and it is really an eye-catcher. This "pavilion" was originally built and designed for the emperors to find calm and peace.
Nowadays, it's a busy place crowded with tourists trying to take the perfect selfie.
Welcome to Michaelerplatz, another astonishing spot right in the City Center, where you feel like a traveler back in time.
Right across the place you can spot the entrance to the Hofburg, the residence of the former Habsburg emperors. In the middle of the place you can find archeological excavation of Roman buildings.
On the right you can walk down Herrengasse, where you can find the "legendary" Cafe Central.
The "Graben" is a pedestrian area next to Stephansplatz and shows many magnificent buildings. This is the main touristic part of the city center with expensive boutiques and shops.
Behind every corner you find history and architectural highlights like the Peterskirche, one of the oldest churches of Vienna.

Can a cemetery be a sight? In Vienna actually yes. The "Wiener Zentralfriedhof" is huge and covers an area about 2,5 square kilometers and hosts around 330 thousands graveyards.
Plus it offers some amazing "Jugendstil" architecture and the so called "Ehrengräber" - graves of "honored" people . Right now you are standing in front of the final resting place of one of the greatest geniuses of all time: Ludwig Van Beethoven.

The Belvedere was built in the early 18th century for "Prinz Eugen von Savoyen" - a powerful field commander of the Habsburg monarchy.
The space is huge and divided into the Lower & Upper Part. Today it connects the inner city with the new "Vienna Main Railroad Station" which is close to the upper entrance.
The Belvedere is truly an amazing piece of baroque architecture.
The Belvedere with the amazing garden and the beautiful palace offers gorgous views. This HAS! to be one of the most beautiful places in the whole world.
A "side" fact, for all you classical music lovers. The famous composer Anton Bruckner wrote his final (and unfinished) "Ninth" symphony at the Lower Belvedere. He died here in 1896!
The "Musikverein" is the "Holy Grail", when it comes to Concert Halls. Even more it is said to be the "Mecca" of Classical Music in the entire world.
This place breathes pure history of music. This hall is the home of the Vienna Philharmonics, but so many other great orchestras, musicians and conductors play here almost every day. A MUST VISIT!
The Schwarzenbergplatz has epic dimensions and is a busy place. And it is full of history. The monument behind the fountain is called the "Heroes Monument of the Red Army" or "Soviet War Memorial"
It was built to honor the death of 17.000 Soviet soldiers, who died during the "Vienna Offensive" in World War 2.
This tour is a "Must-Do" for fans of Classical Music. Visit historic places like the Mozarthaus, stop over by the world-famous "Musikverein" and finish the tour at "Zentralfriedhof" by the Beethoven Graveyard.

The Stadtpark is located right by the Ring in the heart of the city and it is the perfect spot for a lovely walk.
In the middle of the park you find the "Steirereck", one of the best restaurants in the world as well as the famous "Johann Strauss" statue. A monument and tribute to the great "King Of Waltz", which lived and composed his great pieces during the second half of the 19th century here in Vienna.
The Konzerthaus Wien is a superb sounding Concert Hall, where the greatest orchestras and conductors perform on a regular basis.
A clue: Just right of the main entrance (in the same building) you find the outstanding Akademietheater, if you are more the "theater" than "Classical Music" fan.
The Mozarthaus Vienna is located at the Domgasse Nr. 5, right behind the Stephansdom. Mozart lived in several flats in his "Vienna years" from 1781 to 1791, but this one is the only "preserved" one. Mozart lived here in the first floor from Sep. 1784 until Apr. 1787.
Today the Mozarthaus is a museum.
The iconic "St. Stephen´s Cathedral" is without doubt the true symbol of Vienna and it is located right in the center of the City. The construction of this "Gothic" masterpiece goes back to the 12th century.
Stephansplatz and the Stephansdom are the perfect start to explore the fantastic sights of Viennas First District.
